| Note | | He Dave & Maranda Reeves
The Hart Cemetery by Ed Harmon
Dave Reeves was a black man living in Dodge County, Georgia. Dave’s wife was Maranda Reeves. They lived in a small house, near the main house of the Thomas “Tom” Davis home-place. Later the Tom Davis property and main house were owned by Charlie Aaron Davis and became his home-place. Mamie Davis, daughter of Charlie Aaron Davis, and her five sisters grew up on the property and in the main house, near the home of Dave and Maranda Reeves.
Apparently Dave Reeves had two wives; I find a note from Victor Myrick to Joyce Evelyn Jones that says Hanna Hart was also Dave Reeves’ wife. Hanna must have been his first wife.
Maranda Reeves was the wet nurse for the children of Charlie A. and Martha E Graham Davis. Maranda had children of about the same age as the children of Martha Davis and would simply pick up the next hungry child and suckle it, white or black. According to Mamie Davis Jones, Maranda was also the mid-wife at the birth of all of the children of Pink Davis and John Graham.
Maranda was a practitioner of alternative medicine and treated “patients” with all manner of home made cures and treatments. Maranda may have been the person that taught Martha Graham Davis (also a practitioner of alternative medicine) to make herbal medicines and treat illness.
When Dave Reeves died, before 1926, he was “laid out” at his house, as was the custom of the times. According to Mamie Davis Jones, people, by the hundreds, came to the little house to pay their respects. There was a large crowd that stood outside in the yard for hours. Most visitors were the whites of the community. During the wake, my grandmother, Mamie Davis, sat next to “Uncle Dave’s” casket, just as if he were a member of the family and was white. Dave and Maranda were well thought of by all of the members of the community, white and Negro alike.
According to Victor Myrick; Dave Reeves owned quite a bit of land in the community, free and clear. Also per Victor’s notes Dave Reeves donated the land to the Hart family for the Hart Cemetery. The only provision of the donation was that Dave and Maranda would be buried in the Hart cemetery and that the Hart family would maintain their graves. After Dave and his wife died they were buried in the cemetery. However, in later years, the cemetery fence was moved so that the newly placed fence excluded their graves from the rest of the cemetery. Today a large cedar tree, just outside the cemetery fence, marks the head of the graves of Dave and Maranda Reeves.3

| Note* | | Regards the murders of Warren and Sallie Hart, you will note that the information follows what I told you right down the line. My grandmother, who died at 96 said that many blacks were killed and the indication in the story is pretty much that situation. Interesting is that in the notes I find a refrence to a black man and his wife known as Aunt Miranda, who lived on the Charles Aaron Davis place. They were both well regarded and she was the wet nurse for the family as Martha Graham Davis, Charlie's wife was not always capable of nursing her girls as they were born! When Miranda's husband died, the whites for miles around came and sat by his casket and stood outside in a show of respect. A whites only water fountain dosen't exactly go with that picture, does it?3 |
