This web page (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/o/l/Mark-Q-Holland/index.html ) states that Lewis’ son John was married to a Hulda (born about 1805 in GA) I remember reading that you thought there were two John Hollands in Pulaski that may be getting mixed up. Was one the John married to Hulda? She sure was right. There were two Johns. MVW 3-05.2,3 |

| Biography* | 2001 | This note from Becky Nagle. Sounds like what I've heard before. "Uncle Toby said that someone in the family had the Holland genealogy going back to the 5 brothers who immigrated from England and landed in Charleston, SC. He said that 2 brothers stayed in SC, 2 brothers came to GA and one brother went to TX. Do you know anything about this? I only go back to our John Holland who was born in SC in 1803. Do you know his father's name and if he was one of the 5 brothers?" Note from MVW in response to above. I got this Holland family from the census, but all that was shown there were initials. However, all of the initials agree with the full names in the descendant list I received from Cara Murray. I corresponded with Cara and she seemed a careful reseacher so I included her name and dates for the Lewis Holland family here. Her cited sources were mostly secondary such as CD-ROM's. When we look at the family we see that they were in North Carolina in Craven County until their fourth child was born in South Carolina. By the time their ninth child was born they had moved to middle Georgia. In view of all this in March of 2000 I think all needs to be reexamined. Barry Holland has a strong case for Lewis not being a direct ancestor. Cara Murray got her things from CD Roms which could point back to me. |
| Note* | 2005 | He Here is a rather definative note from Barry Holland. I included it as the Holland research is still very much up in the air. I (Barry) am 100% sure of my descendants of Lewis and Sarah (Sutton) Holland. They had 6 children, as per the deed of gift filed 1 Sep 1835 in Barbour County, AL while Lewis was still a resident of Jackson County, FL. I do believe the Charity, James B., Joshua, your John, Elizabeth, and Elisha are related to my Lewis, but they are NOT his children. Below is a short synopsis of how I came to be 100% sure of my info. The first record I ever found that linked my Allen to Lewis was the 2 of them signing a petition together in Jackson County, FL for a postal route to that area. This was 22 Jun 1834. I found this in a book of Territorial Papers for the Territory of Florida in the Shreveport, LA library. This was probably 10 or 15 years ago. At this time I started trying to prove Lewis was Allen's father. I tracked Lewis back to NC, finding his 15 Sep 1794 marriage to Sarah Davis. Later on, (I really can't remember right now) I believe I found the Sutton name while researching at my local LDS library. I found the census records in GA and FL for Lewis, the land records in Jefferson County, Pulaski County, Laurens County, Wilkinson County GA and the Jackson County land grant. I was at the LDS library and I decided to order some microfilms(even though I really didn't have the extra cash to waste). The first one was the reverse index to the deeds of Jackson County, FL. Nothing. Next I got the Jackson County, FL estates. I did find several interesting entries in it. The I ordered the film of the Barbour County, AL deed index(film rolls 1294003 and 1294004), hoping to find a land record that helped to prove Allen and John were brothers (something else I had believed since I started doing this genealogy as a 6th grade project when I was 11 or 12 years old. I'm now 33). When the film came in and I looked at it, my heart jumped into my throat. I can't find where I wrote it down but the first entry said “Lewis Holland to wife and children”. I quickly contacted the courthouse in Clayton, AL and they referred me to a local genealogist who did lookups. She copied the deed record for me and sent it to me. I transcribed it, shown here: Barbour Co. AL Probate Ct. Deed Book A, Pages 134-36 Territory of Florida Know all men by these presents that I Lewis Holland of the aforesaid Jackson County named county and territory in consideration of the natural love which I have and bear for my wife Elizabeth Holland and my children Moses Holland John Holland Susanna Parker formerly Susannah Holland Allen Holland and the children of my deceased daughter Mary Taylor formerly Mary Holland counting in consideration the said children as one heir and the children of my deceased son William Holland as one heir making in all seven heirs and allso for divers other good causes and considerations I(?) the said Lewis Holland hereunto moving have given granted and confirmed and by these presents do give grant and confirm unto the said Moses Holland Jno. In witness whereof I the said Lewis Holland have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this first day of September one thousand eight hundred and thirty five. In presence of Jno. M. Bush sign the same as witness in presents of the said Lewis Holland and in the presents of such other Sworn to and subscribed before me this seventh day of September A D 1835 Jno. Bush Samuel M. Jackson J. P. L. S. Recorded 11 Jan(or Jun) 1836. Needless to say I was floating on cloud nine. I also found the deed records in Jackson County, FL where after Lewis died, his widow Elizabeth complained to the court about the above deed of gift, stating she didn't know about this and she didn't get her fair share due her as the widow. The court found for her and awarded her right of dower. There is also a deed where Allen sells off Lewis' land, except her 1/3 share, to William Mooring. Then, Elizabeth sells her share to William Mooring. I also found in Pulaski County deeds between my Allen and your Hollands. Book I, pg 230, 11/13/1837 has Allen of Barbour Co., AL selling to James Holland of Pulaski Co. Lots 69 and 52, originally of the 22nd district of Wilkinson County, but now Pulaski Co., for $400. Book I, pg 250, 11/28/1837 has Allen of Barbour County selling to Solomon Brewer of Pulaski County Lot 21, originally of the 22nd district of Wilkinson County, but now Pulaski County, for $25. This deed was signed by both Allen and John Holland. These findings solidified my belief of Lewis' family. But I was still not 100% sure of the Sutton name for Sarah. A few years ago I visited with J. A. Madden, who was in his 80s at the time, and a surviving great grandchild of Allen Holland, living in Arcadia, Bienville, LA. He had in his possession his mother's things, and in her things were Allen Holland's personal papers. He let me go through them and copy several things. One of the things I copied was a copy of a deed from Solomon Sutton to his daughter Sarah Holland, giving her a slave named Cresee, the same slave that Lewis listed in his deed of gift. The Sutton deed is here: State of Georgia Know all men by these presents that I Solomon Sutton Pulaski County Senor of the County aforesaid for the love I have unto my daughter Sarah Holland hath given and by these presents do give a certain negro girl named Cresee to her and her heirs forever and all her increase which rights is totally in her after me and my wife Mary Death in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the thirteenth day of August 1816. Signed Sealed and delivered in the presents of us Attest Moses Sutton his Solomon X Sutton mark Georgia Personally appeared before me Moses Sutton who being Pulaski County duly sworn saith that he saw Solomon Sutton Sign seal and deliver the within deed of gift to Sarah Holland this 7th day of October 1816. Moses Sutton Sworne to before me this 7th day of October 1816 W. W. Hall J. P. Entered April 24th 1818 G. B. Gardner Clk. Georgia I John ? Mitchell deputy clerk of of the Superior Court in Pulaski County the county aforesiad do hereby certify that the above is a true copy of the deed made by Solomon Sutton to Sarah Holland taken from the records of my office this November the 29th 1837. Given under my hand John ? Mitchell D Clk Also in the papers was a personal letter from John to his brother Allen, while Allen was living in Sabine Parish, LA. Later on, I received a letter from Mr. Madden, in which he enclosed a copy of Allen's family bible that he finally had found. It didn't have anything further back than Allen, but it solved many of my questions I had on his children, as well as deepened the mystery surrounding Elizabeth Holland and Sherrod Lemuel Holland, 2 children listed in his bible and living with or near him in LA but too old to be from his first marriage. Elizabeth married Green Taylor, the son of Harbert and Mary Holland Taylor. Anyway, primarily from the above deeds as well as the land records, census records, etc., I have concluded that: Lewis Holland was born ca 1777 in NC, probably in Pitt County. He married 15 Sep 1794 in Craven County to Sarah Sutton Davis, the daughter of Solomon and Mary (Blount?) Sutton. They had 6 children, as listed in the deed of gift. They were: 1) Mary, 2) Moses, 3) John, 4) William, 5) Susanna, and 6) Allen. I know Sarah died after 1816, as that is when the Sutton deed is written, and probably after 1820, since the 1820 census shows a female old enough to be her and there are no marriages for Lewis in Pulaski prior to 1820. I know Lewis moved to Florida in 1826, receiving a land grant there. He was living there in the 1830 census. I know he died after 1 Sep 1835, when the deed of gift was filed, and before Feb 1837, when Elizabeth was selling off her dower. I also have a copy of the lawsuit filed, but there is only the date when it was recorded in the book, 3 years later. I am 90 to 100% sure I am right on Mary's descendants, primarily because of the loads of information I have received from her descendants. I do have questions on Moses. The Moses that married Laura Stewart in 1819 in Pulaski County could possibly be part of your Holland family, as it was a common name and he was on a deed selling land to Cullen Peacock in Pulaski County, that was signed by several Stewarts and witnessed by John Thomas, Joshua and James Holland. It's possible the Moses in the deed is indeed my Moses, as he was from Barbour County at the time. I am unsure of my John's first marriage, but I am 100% sure of his second marriage to Hulda Herrington as well as the children he had from his first marriage, from a succession record I found in Arcadia. I'll have to dig it up. I know nothing about Susanna, other than she married a Parker. As for Allen, I've spent my 20 some odd years of genealogy digging his info up. As far as your Hollands, I strongly believe (75% sure) that they are indeed siblings, and were the child of Lewis' brother, though I really don't know who that would be. Something in my gut tells me my Hollands and your Hollands were 1st cousins. Sorry to burst any bubbles on your research, but I feel we all are very close to blowing this thing wide open. What I/we need is someone who can make a trip to the courthouse in Craven County to look for a purported estate record for Spears Holland, whom I believe strongly to be Lewis' father, as well as someone who can hit the courthouses in Pulaski, Laurens, Wilkinson, and Jefferson Counties to scour the records there for all the Holland info that can be gathered. Keep me informed if anything new is found. If you want any copies of the stuff I have copies of, let me know. Some of the copies are hard to read. Barry in 2005.3 |

| CENSUS1860* | 1860 | In 1860 In 1860 he is living next door to his father, James with children John 8, Sarah 6 and Eliza E. 4. There is no wife shown on the census. In my opinion, the two year old Charity living with James is likely a child of Moses. A good guess would be that Charity's birth was the cause of the death of Mattie Peacock. Probably Moses entrusted the youngest child to his father James as James had two adult women in his household capable of caring for an infant. |

| CENSUS1870 | 1870 | He appeared on the census in 1870 at GA; He lived next door to widower Daniel Dykes who had a four year old child named Moses. Moses apprently was taken in by Elizabeth Bryant (Holland) and Polly her sister who apparently adopted the surname of Dykes although I'm told that neither married a person named Dykes. |
| CENSUS1880* | 1880 | In 1880 In 1880 this family lived just two doors from the Bryant ladies, Margaret, Jane and Artipe.6 |
| CENSUS1900* | 1900 | He appeared on the census in 1900; There is something peculiar here. The 1900 census shows Moses and Mary being married for 26 years and having eight children all of whom lived. In fact Mary had nine children and was married longer that 26 years if you believe previous census and marriage record in Pulaski County. |

He said Prunella was daughter of James and Charity Holland. I've found no evidence of this yet, but am including this in case I do. I am descended from James Holland and Charity Barefoot. My Greatgrandfather Lawson G. Hudson married Prennila or Prunella Holland and her sister Marcella married Walker Hudson, Lawson's brother. I have done a lot of research and I think James and Charity seperated about 1840. I have traced Lawson and Walker Hudson to Oldtown in Conecuh County, Alabama in 1860 and 1870. In the 1860 census Charity is living with Henry Holland and his wife Nancy and she is 70 years old, I think it was mistakenly entered as 70 when it should have been 60.Then in the 1870 census she is living with Lawson and Prunella and she is listed as 70. I also found James Hudson married to Louisa M. in the 1860 census of Pulaski County, Georgia, but then in the 1870 census he is single again and living with twin daughters Mary and Elizabeth and Charity Hoolland 13. Do you agree with this reasoning? Please let me know. Ralph Campbell The Henry Holland looks like this family could have been the Hollands from Sumpter County Georgia who also had a Charity. I think the 1860 and 1870 Alabama Charity are two different people. Here is a posting from Dec. 2006 :Database: :3196939 Individual: I3850 Link: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3196939&id=I3850 Name: Elizabeth Marshall Email: bmarsh@tampabay.rr.com URL: URL title: Note: Margaret is correct. Perenial Holland who married Lawson Hudson was a daughter of Jethro and Charity Holland of Sumter Co. I am descended from their son Henry. To add to the confusion of two Charity Hollands, Jethro had a brother James Holland in Sumter about the same age as James Holland in Pulaski. They were from NC, not SC, however. |
