| Death* | June 1890 | He died in June 1890 at Pulaski County, GA, at age 37; Jimmy Lee and I have been working on some information about Nancy Davis, daughter of William "Bill" (Zacharias' son) & Lulla Davis. They had a number of children when both died in 1890, within 4 weeks of each other. He died of Typhoid and she of childbirth. Bill's brothers and sisters took 4 of the youngest children in. Nancy was farmed out to Reuben & Willie Ann Fair Davis to raise. She was about 8 years old at the time. Sometime before 1900, date unknown, Reuben seduced Nancy and she had a child. In the 1900 GA Census, Nancy is listed as living with her brother and his wife, John D. & Edith Davis. She later married Kinion Phillips in 1903. The 1910 GA Census does not list the Phillips family with any children born before their marriage date. In the mean time, Reuben has been run out of town by Nancy's brothers and purportedly changed his name to Lee Johnson and headed South. In the 1900 GA Pulaski Co Census, Willie Ann, Reuben's wife) is raising her family w/o Reuben. Her father, William Fair, has moved in with her. This begs the question, did Reuben change his name to Lee Johnson and where did he go? We do not know when Nancy's child was born, it's name or where it went. Since the child could have gone with any number of relatives, it will be almost impossible to find. Any thoughts? Bob Here are Jimmie Lee's comments on the topic: According to Jerry's father. When Nancy's mother & father died the children were farmed out and Reubin and his wife, Willie Ann took in Nancy. Then Reubin got her pregnant and her brothers set out to get Reubin (possibly kill him). Jerry's grandfather, Jesse (Pete) helped him escape to South GA or FL by carrying him on his back down the Granny house (Pete's house) road and across the branch to the main road so that only one set of tracks would show and they, of course, were Pete's. Or so the story goes. Contact was lost and no one really knows where Reubin went. If Pete knew he took it to his grave with him....... JLEE.2 |
| Death | 8 July 1890 | He died on 8 July 1890 at GA at age 37; From Tad Evans "Pulaski County, Georgia, Newspaper Clippings, Volume IV, 1888-1897", in the newspaper printed "Thursday, July 17, 1890" the following; "Mr. William Davis, a good citizen of this county, died on Tuesday night of last week of typhoid fever. He was about 38 years old, and leaves a family and large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his loss". Look as if he died 8 Jul 1890. In similar articles, they would say "leaves a husband / wife and children". Since they didn't, I assume Lulu Davis died before he but I was not able to find anything to substantiate this.3 |
| Note* | He Here is a note from Ed Harmon whose mother did a good deal of quality research along with Victor Myrick. I do not know how much you know about the entire matter, but it is a pretty sordid tale. It all began in 1890 when William "Bill" Davis died of Typhoid in June and his wife Lusia E. "Lu" Sparrow died on July 10, 1890 during child birth. The children were split up and "taken in" by the families of the Zacharias Davis children. As I read the notes, this was the split according to my mother's notes: Sally Davis and Warren Hart took, Minnie and Willie Ruben Davis and Ann, took Nancy and Pink Fannie Davis and Willis took, Fanny Mary Ann Davis and George Meyer took, George I do not know where the other children went. Sometime after the death of the parents Nancy turned up pregnant, Nancy's brother's apparently decided that Ruben had lived way too long and thus Ruben left the country, assuming the alias Lee Johnson. Pink then went to live with Warren & Sally. John Graham was after Pink before she turned 14 and that may have been what the Hart's objected to, John was 26 and Pink 14 when they married. It might also have been that the Hart's did not like the Grahams, period. Daniel Graham, John's grand father looks to have been quite the brigand, with robbery, burglary, theft, murder, etc. to his credit. I do know a Daniel Graham from Georgia, killed his father in-law a Barefoot, in SC and I have found a note that says grandma Barefoot died at near 100 sitting in her rocking chair with her corn cob pipe in her mouth. A pencil note is at the bottom and says related on the Graham side but do not know how. Soooooo it must be the same Daniel. This would also explain my grand mother's comment about the Grahams being the meanest people on the face of the earth. This weekend I came across a note on a paper in my mother's files. The note was apparently made in the 80s and said "John Graham having breakfast before going to field to work, fell over dead. Cerebral hemorrhage I think from what Mom says." If John Graham fell over dead from a cerebral hemorrhage, he did not confess to anything on his death bed! So now what? It is about as clear as mud. Ed. | |

| DEED* | 9 February 1779 | Zachariah Davis was shown on a deed on 9 February 1779 at Bute, NC; I am only guessing that father of Zachariah was himself named Zachariah. I have no proof that these are the same people or even that Zachariah was the father of Zach and Zenos. Here is a record that might be a clue: Bute County, North Carolina Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, 1767-1779 9 February 1779 A Deed from Robert Cooper to Zachariah Davis was proved by the oath of Stephen Gupton a Witness thereto & on motion the same is Ordered to be Registered. Perhaps a future researcher will find more information. As Jimmie Lee Davis says: "Zachariah and Zenos divorced their parents". Margot, If family folk lore is close to correct, Zachariah and brother, Zenos, walked away from family one Sunday afternoon and came here eventually. But I tend to think like you....perhaps the whole family traveled this way. The name of Guyton as a last name appears in my family history on my Daniel side. They are way, way distant. But there was someone in Laurens County, (Dublin) Georgia by that name related to my family. Perhaps they were related to the Davis side too. Will have to keep checking it out. Thanks, JLEE ----- Original Message ----- From: Margot Woodrough To: Bob Bridger ; Jimmie Davis ; Jimmie Davis Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2005 11:41 AM Subject: Zachariah Jimmie Lee and Bob, I've been combing through my Pulaski county Hist one more time and find that in 1818 both Zachariah and Sion Davis paid tax. Sion paid one dollar and change and Zachariah paid less than one dollar. Clearly one of these fellows is our ancestor as our Zachariah was not born yet. |
| Note | 1815 | He Zachariah and his brother Zenos were said to have been bound out to Quakers, Tom and Matilde King as children. There is discussion both ways regarding the matter of them being twins. in 1815. |
| Note | 1818 | In 1818 The tax rolls for Pulaski County clearly show Zachariah and Sion Davis. One of these fellows was the father of our Zachariah.2 |
| LOTTERY* | 1827 | He wassuccessful lottery participant A Eanos Davis drew for land in Capt Holiday's Dist # 127 Dist 8 of Lee County. The similarity of the name make me keep this record. No proof at all. in 1827 at Lee, GA.. |
| Note* | 2003 | In reference to our conversation about our Zachariah Davis' father being named Zachariah: As I said before, I thought I had seen a Zachariah Davis in Pulaski County Records in about 1811........the following records come from a book by Lee G. Barrow in 1994: Early Court Records of Pulaski County, Georgia 1809 - 1825: on page 142: On Oct. 27, 1815, Zacheriah Davis' name was drawn to serve on the Petit Jury at the next term of this Court. (page 114 of the minutes of the Superior Court, October 1815) on page 144: There were two Petit Jurys drawn and Zachariah Davis' name was in the second Jury on Monday, Apr. 22, 1816. (This is listed on page 117 of the minutes for April 1816.) on page 163: Zachariah Davis was sworn as a juror in place of Philip Whichard. (page 120 of court records for April 1816) on page 171: October 1816, a John O. Grant was sworn as a Petit Juror in place of Zachariah Davis. (page 178 of court records for October 31, 1816) on page 31: A list of Petit Jurors shows Zachariah Davis on the list as well as a Hoziah Davis. (no page number listed of court records) on page 184: Inferior Court minutes, Page 29, July 1812 Inferior Court July 20, 1812. The Court met agreeable to law present the Honorable James M. Taylor, James T. Thomas, Henry Fulgham and Murdoch McLeod. The Court proceeded to the nomination of magistrates in the several districts in said County. (Then it goes on to list all of them and Capt. Dykes's district is Abraham Yerty and Zachariah Davis, Constables.) This was the earliest record, but I have seen in some of my stuff a date of 1811, I'll keep searching. And in regards to the fact that so many people agree and disagree about Zachariah and Zenos being twins (we were always told this by Jerry's father and uncles), I wonder if his (Zachariah's) father maybe had a twin. There are records of a Zion Davis and a Hosiah Davis about the 1811's etc.? What are your thoughts about this? (Note from MVW 2006 - I think this may be exactly what it was and I bet even further that it was the earlier Davis who were bound out to Quakers.). |

| Birth* | 1815 | Zacharias Davis was born in 1815 at Raleigh, Wake, N.C; In 1999 Doris Dixon wrote that the "Survey of Cemeterys for Bleckley County", 1977 states that he was born in 1811. This date taken from a tombstone, and of course there is not way of knowing if tombstone is original or a replacement. However, the 1870 census gives his age age 58 which supports birth in 1811 or 1812. The birthdate of Oct 15 was taken from information that I believe Doris Dixon gave to Aaron Floyd in 1991. Another source gave birthdate as Oct. 8 1815, but I think that is date for his brother Zenos. Here is a note from Ed Harmon: Zacharias born 1811 in NC. Zacharias was the twin brother of Zenous. Zenous is found spelled in most instances with a S and not a Z. Zenous and Zacarias were bound out to a Quaker family, the head of which was Tom King. Tom's daughter Elizabeth King married Zacharias. Elizabeth is the "and wife" in the photo you sent to me. I note in the documents I have that the brothers were reported to deny the existance of their parents. The quote attributed to them is "As to them, as far as we are concerned, we have none." I have not found any notes so far that identifies the parents, a good bit of speculation, but no actual link. Also there are several Davis men found in the area at the same time as the twin brothers, all born in NC. Speculation is so far that they are the brothers or uncles of the twins. Oh, I changed the spelling on Zacharias' name in my records, to match his headstone, which I understand to to be Zacharias and not Zachariah. By the by, you should correct your references to Zacharias and Zenaus Davis, as they were twin brothers, their DOB is the same! They were either born on September 8 or March 8, 1815. In my data, I have now changed the date of birth to March 8, 1815. I was using September and March, 8, 1815. March 8, 1815 is the date on the headstone of Zenaus and matches the census reports for Zenaus and Zacharias. Note they were both born in 1815 on every census report. Zacharias headstone is in error, without a doubt, in that it is based on his supposed age at the time of death, not his actual DOB. If he was 72 in Jan 1885, he could not be 80, 6 years later. The DOB for Zenaus is constant. Ed.3,4 |

| NEWSPAPER* | 1 January 1885 | This is from the Hawkinsville Dispatch: Mr. Zachariah Davis of Pulaski County is seventy-two years old and is father of seventeen children, all of whom are grown, and sixteen of the number are married and living within six miles of their father, and the other one lives with him. Mr. Davis and his twin brother came to Georgia from North Carolina long years ago. They are both now living in this county. Zachariah has had born to him eighteen children (one having died) and as stated, sixteen are living near the paternal homestead. He has seventy grand children, and it was his desire to have a family reunion this Christmas, but he thought his house was too small. Judge McGriff, from whom we learned the above facts, states he has known the Davis brothers for thirty years, and they have been known and recognized as worth men and exemplary citizens. Zechariah and Elizabeth had a family reunion that was written up in the newspaper. The article appeared on January 1, 1885. on 1 January 1885 at Pulaski County, GA.. |

An internet source says that all the children starting with William of 1852 and later were born in Pulaski County. Don't know if the family moved or if the county line changed.

This is supported by the fact that the 1870 census lists Senas age 55 and Zachariah age 58 living within four dwellings of each other. His tombstone gives DOB as March 8 1815 However, Jimmie Lee Davis disagrees for the following reason: I feel that Zachariah was a twin because Jerry's father, uncles and aunts said so. They, of course, are Zachariah's son, Jesse (Pete) Davis' children. And my grandfather, George P. Woods, editor of the Hawkinsville Dispatch and News, wrote the newspaper article to which she is referring.2,3 |

| 2002 | Faye Dyal [fdyal@progressivetel.com] wrote the following: No, I did not do the Floyd cemetery survey. It was completed by members of the Wiregrass Genealogy group. The link to the cemetery listings was from their site. I have found Senos listed as Senas, Cenas, Cenns on various census records, starting in Twiggs County in 1840. He is shown there as Cenns, age 20-30, with wife, age 15 -20. In 1850 Twiggs, Cenas Davis, age 35, wife Julia, age 25. Children shown on this census were Mary J., James, and Henry. ( William Henry was my gg grandfather.) In 1860, they are in Pulaski County. He is shown as Lenon Davis on this census. Voter records and jury lists, as found in newspaper clippings, show him as Senas or Senos. Since the grave shows Senos, I have spelled his name that way. But I am still unsure of the spelling. Census records show that he could neither read nor write, so that in part may account for the various spellings. I look forward to hearing from you with additional info on my Davis-Floyd line. | Biography | http://home.earthlink.net/~calmesneck/calmes_family_history.htm The Calmes Family and the Ownership of Calmes Neck by Paul Zeisset Marquis Calmes I Marquis de la Calmes was born in France in about 1675. His father, Guillaume de Calmes, held the title of Seigneur de Barbeiran. While the family was titled, Marquis was probably not a rank [see notes]. The family was Huguenot, and Marquis fled with his parents from France to England in about 1685 to avoid the religious persecution in France, as the Edict of Nantes, promulgated in 1598 by Henry IV, was revoked by Louis XIV in 1685. Marquis de la Calmes arrived in Virginia between 1696 and 1700 with his wife Isabella. They first lived in a Huguenot settlement on the James River, then in 1705 they moved to a plantation in Stafford County, where he died prior to 1741 (although this cannot be confirmed due to the destruction of records during the Civil War) and his wife died in 1742. Marquis Calmes II Their son, Marquis II, was born in Stafford County in 1705. He was educated in France, returned to Virginia about 1723, and lived for a while in Williamsburg. He married Winnifred Waller in 1725 and in 1734 they left Stafford County for land west of the Blue Ridge. They eventually settled in the Shenandoah Valley, in the part of Frederick County that eventually became Clarke County. In 1747, Marquis Calmes secured one of the Minor Grants for Land West of the Great Mountains, which Lord Fairfax confirmed by a deed when he took up his abode at Greenway Court. That tract was Calmes Neck. Marquis II was a leading citizen, holding office in the county government as well as in his parish. When Frederick County was organized in 1743, Marquis II was appointed one of the original twelve justices, and served until 1753. He was a church warden of Frederick Parish in 1746 and several succeeding years. He was commissioned a Captain in the militia against the Indians and attained the rank of Major in the Virginia Militia during the French and Indian War. Marquis II and Winnifred lived on the Vineyard Plantation (the main house of which is on Route 621, across the river south from the Calmes Neck recreation area, now owned by Charles Burwell). The 1747 deed shows a Calmes house across the river west of Calmes Neck, on land more recently owned by Richard Plater. Plater claimed to have found the foundation of such a building. There is no record of Calmes leasing or owning any part of Vineyard Plantation, which was then owned by Robert Carter. Marquis II is thought to have caused the planting of the vineyard on the Plantation, which was the first vineyard planted west of the Blue Ridge. Marquis II had considerable land holdings in addition to Calmes Neck. In 1741 he purchased 108 acres in Stafford County. He and others were granted 60,000 acres on the Monongahela River in what is now West Virginia. In addition, Marquis II owned a lot in Winchester when it was laid out in 1753, as did George Washington. On at least one occasion, Marquis II employed Washington to conduct a survey. Marquis Calmes II died in 1755 and was buried on the Vineyard Plantation next to his wife. A century later, Winnifred’s tombstone was moved to Old Chapel Cemetery, but that of Marquis was beyond repair and was not moved. Marquis Calmes III Their son, Marquis Calmes III, born in 1726, was likely the first family member to live on Calmes Neck, probably from about 1750 until his death in Jan. 1794. Marquis III served as a Captain of Colonial Troops under Lord Dunmore during the French and Indian War, and as a major in the Revolutionary War. His nephew, Marquis Calmes IV, was a captain in the Revolutionary War, after which he settled in Kentucky. Marquis IV also served as a general in the War of 1812. In 1790, Marquis Calmes III brought a suit against John Graves for encroaching on his land. Graves had built a house near the end of Little River Lane and claimed it was on his own property, until a 1792 survey demonstrated otherwise. Subsequent disposition of Calmes Neck Marquis III’s wife Betty Combs Calmes lived at Calmes Neck until her death in Sept. 1804. Calmes Neck was willed to George Gibbs Calmes by Marquis III and he took possession on the death of Betty Combs Calmes. George Calmes never lived on Calmes Neck, but lived in Hampshire Co., now in West Virginia, across the Potomac from Cumberland, Md. In 1834 his will transferred Calmes Neck to heirs including his daughter Lucy Perry. When Lucy Perry died she left nine children, including George Calmes Perry and Marquis Perry. The Calmes Neck property was finally sold “in the case of George C. Perry and others vs. Marquis Perry and others” in 1884 to Thomas M. Nelson. Marquis III’s will had provided for the reservation of twenty acres to be laid off around the family burying ground “in case my said Nephew Capt George Calmes or his Heirs should ever Sell” the property. No mention of the burying ground is made in the Nelson deed or any subsequent deed, nor does any map of which we know record where that burying ground might be. Nelson owned the property for 22 years before he died, but in the following 54 years there were 14 changes of ownership, culminating in the purchase of Calmes Neck in 1960 by Double E Land and Cattle Company. In all of that time, Calmes Neck remained with the boundaries defined in 1747 in the grant from Lord Fairfax. The original grant did, however, retain mining rights and “reserving also all Deer, Elks and Buffaloes, Bears and all manner of game”. Lord Fairfax may have taken the elk and buffalo, but we have more deer now than Marquis Calmes or Lord Fairfax ever imagined. Notes: Excerpt from Clarke Times-Courier, June 28, 2000, page 5 “Cemetery is marked for future”: “Another mystery concerns the progenitor of the Calmes family, the first Marquis Calmes, who came to the colony in the late 1600s. Was he really a French Marquis, a title of the nobility? “[Jerry] Dalton [of the Genealogical Society of Versailles, KY] doesn’t think so. He said there is a chateau in France belonging to the de Calmes Family, but they would have been the ‘lesser’ nobility. Marquis was too high a rank,” for the owner of that little chateau, Dalton said. His research shows the family rose to the nobility by providing some of the money to ransom the king of France from the Spaniards.” Other sources: Buck, Walter H. A short sketch of the Calmes family. | Note* | He I did a google search for "scriptor Avitatis" and found this. Jerry Dalton] The de Calmés family chateau -- Chateau de Serviès -- is located in Serviès-en-Val, Department of Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon Region, France. Serviès-en-Va is a village of about 250 inhabitants, located about 20 kilometers (12.4), southeast of Carcassonne, population (1994) of 46,000. Serviès-en-val is located in Les Corbières, "a range of hills in Southern France . . . . which form a transition between the Massif Central and the Pyrennes, reaching a height of 1231m/4039f . . . . For centuries this was a region of strategic importance as a bulwark of the French kingdom against Spain, its natural strength being reinforced by a string of fortresses," including Chateau Serviès-en-Val. The Chateau is presently owned by Bernard de Calmés, the Thirteenth Baron de Calmés, who inherited it when his father , Gaston de Calmés, the Twelfth Baron, died in 1988. Bernard who lives in Toulouse with his sister, Martine, is an employee of one of France's largest assurance (insurance) companies. His mother, the Baronne Marguerite-Marie (Pujol) de Calmés, lives in Carcassonne. She usually occupies the Chateau, often with one or more of her children, during the summer months. The chateau is closed from October to late May because it lacks central heating. She graciously receives Calmes family members who write her in advance for an appointment during the summer months. | |

| Biography* | 2007.This document was found on line in pdf format. In order to put it into TMG I had to scan and convert to a .doc. This explains the peculiarities. MVW A SHORT SKETCH OF THE Calmes Family By WALTER H. BUCK The Calmes Family was one of a number of French Huguenot families which fled from France at or about the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. Such families usually went first to England and afterwards many of them came to America. As will be shown later in this sketch, the first record of the purchase of land in Virginia by the Calmes Family was in 1705. Only twenty years, therefore, elapsed from the Revocation until this purchase. The best authority on the Huguenots in America is the distinguished scholar, Gilbert Chinard of Princeton University. In 193·1 he edited "A Huguenot Exile in Virginia". This is a translated reprint of the story of Durand of Dauphine first published at the Hague in 1687. Efforts to identify the author "with knoWn members of the family;' have proved fruitless" says Chinard, which appears to be usually the case with the Huguenots. Durand visited Ralph Wormeley at "Rosegill" and William Fitzhugh at "Bedford". The Calmes Family is an important French family, most of whose members reside in Languedoc and in Southern France. However, as in the case of Durand of Dauphine, attempts to connect the American family of Calmes with known members of the French Calmes family have failed. For assistance to some scholar who has the time and patience I give below certain Calmes Family Data from France which was sent to me by :Mrs. Palmer Campbell, wife of the Rector of the Episcopal Church at Sandston, Virginia, who was a :Miss Calmes. Her father was William Bourne Calmes who died when Mrs. Campbell was very young. Their home adjoined "HelmlytJ, the home of her uncle, Major Fielding Calmes. Pierre Calmes - "Scriptor Avitatis~', Carcassonne. :Mentioned in Acts of 1445, 1456, 1458. Pierre Calmes, Notary of Trebes 1524, (son of the Pierre Calmes named above). His three sons were Jean Calmes; Claud Calmes, Seigneur de Barheiran; and Pierre Calmes, Seigneur de Saint Julien (will dated 1545). Claud de Calmes, Seigneur de Saint Julien, son of Pierre Calmes Seigneur de Saint Julien, Councillor of Carcassonne in 1619. Jean Francois de Calmes Seigneur de Saint Julien, son of Claud de Calmes, Seigneur de Saint Julien. Guillaume de Calmes (born 1642), Seigneur de Barbeiran, son of Jean Francois de Calmes, Seigneur de Saint Julien. (This last named may have been the ancestor of the Virginia Calmes Family for one of the legends in the family is that the original Marquis Calmes come to Virginia with a brother William who doubtless was named for his father). References to Marquis Calmes in many historical writings as being a French Marquis are without foundation. In Fairfax Harrison's "Landmarks of Old Prince William", Volume I, Chapter 13, we find that Nicholas Hayward of London purchased from Lord Culpepper, who was then the proprietor of the Northern Neck, 30,000 acres of land in Stafford County. In 1686 Haywal-d together with Richard Foote and Robert Bristow of London and George Brent of Stafford County formed a partnership to exploit this land. Eventually the Haywards sold their land, the Footes settled on their lands and so did the Brents, while the Bristows' land was ultimately confiscated. On some of this land on Aquia Creek the Calmes settled. Harrison notes that "in 1706 and 1709 one who is listed in the land books as 'Marquess Calmeby' had proprietary grants on the upper water of Aquia". (Page 189). This was :Marquis Calmes I and Harrison suggests that the Huguenots in Stafford County were an overflow from the Huguenot settlement at Manakintown. However, in Brock's authoritative "Huguenot Emigration to America" (Collections Virginia Historical Society, Volume V, 1886) which tells of Manakintown the Calmes name does not appear. That settlement took place in 1700 and included 500 emigrants under the leadership of lVlarquis de la l\iuce and the land occupied by them was a gift from the Colony of Virginia. William F. Boogher, the author of "Gleanings of Virginia History", in an unpublished note on the Calmes Family records that on May 11, 1705, a land warrant for 711 acres on the North Run of Aquia Creek was assigned to Marquis Calmes I by Nicholas Brent. This warrant was confirmed to him by a grant from Lady Culpepper, Thomas Fairfax, and Catherine, his wife, October 5, 1705. (Liber 3, folio 147, Northern Neck Land Grants, Richmond, Virginia). It was actually executed in Lancaster County at the time when Robert (King) Carter was the Agent for the Proprietors but the original records having been destroyed, Carter's signature as Agent cannot be verified. In addition, Boogher records that he received another grant for 744 acres on the South Run of Aquia Creek adjoining his own lands and the lands of Henry Brent and Col. Robert Carter. (Libel' 3, folio 223, Northern Neck Land Grants). These two tracts were surveyed by Thomas Gregg. 3 This Marquis Calmes I, according to Boogher, died in Stafford County prior to 1741 but because of the destruction of the early records of that County further evidence could not be found. Boogher relates that his son, Marquis Calmes II, was educated in France and returned to Virginia about 1723, and on October 21, 1741, purchased 108 acres of land on Hope Creek, Stafford County (Liber E, folio 342, Northern Neck Land Grants). This was surveyed by John Savage. According to Harrison, the land grants referred to by him adjoined those of William WalIer, but Harrison was mistaken in thinking that Marqu.is Calmes I married William Waller's daughter Winnifred for, in fact, her husband was :Marquis Calmes II. We know that Marquis Calmes II died in Frederick County in 1755 and that letters on his estate were granted in that year to his eldest son,William Waller Calmes (Frederick County Order Book 16, page 340). According to Boogher, Marquis Calmes II was born in Stafford County in 1705 and if this latter date is correct he could not have been the Marquis Calmes who purchased land in 1705. The inscription on the tombstone of Winnifred Waller Calmes in the Old Chapel Cemetery near Millwood records her death on October 6, 1751, aged 42, she and her husband having been married twenty six years. Their marriage, therefore, took place in 1725 when she was sixteen years old and he,according to Boogher, was twenty years old. The records of Frederick County show that Marquis Calmes II was one of the Justices composing the first Court held in Frederick County, that he was an officer in the Virginia Militia, that he was on the Vestry of Frederick Parish and that when Winchester was laid out in 1753 Marquis Calmes II became the owner of Lot 16. In Wayland's "History of Shenandoah County" I find the following (page 668), "In the year 1754 there were only four 'chairs' in Frederick County. A chair (chaise) was a two-wheeled gig and the four in Frederick County referred to belonged to "Lord Fairfax, Colonel James Wood, Marquis Calmes and John Hite." Marquis Calmes II's wife, as already stated, died October 6, 1751, and her tombstone now rests in. the Old Chapel Cemetery near Millwood, which cemetery remains as a memorial to the loving care of Dr. Robert G. Randolph of "New Market". From "The Old Chapel" published by the Blue Ridge. Press in 1906, it appears that the tombstone ofWinnifredWallerGaImes, the wife of1\. |
