| Note* | He It was great to view your work. My GG grandmother was Sarah Vinson (b.1817 d.1848)and married to my gg grandfather Garner Mercer of Twiggs Co., Ga.. There is a connection to the Joseph F. Vinson that married Josephine E. Griffin. The tax Digest of Twiggs 1853 states that Garner Mercer was guardian for the children of Benjamin F.Vinson. In the census of 1860 John Vinson (14) and Benj'm F. Vinson ( 12) were listed in the household, along with my g grandfather Pinckney. I believe these same children were listed in the census of 1850 with a Benjamin F. Harrell and Nancy. It is likely that all these Vinson's are connected to James Vinson b. about 1775 d.1848 and Elizabeth, both of Twiggs. I have just taken an interest in the Mercer, Vinson and Harrell connection. If you have any knowledge that will assist me, please respond. Thank you. Victor " Chip " Davidson. |

| Biography* | According to corespondence dating to 1952 Mary Lou Vinson was the heir to oil bearing land in Texas. Tina Floyd did work on the subject, but was never able to actually recover any inheritance. For posterity the story is related here. Mr. Frank Cook (don't know who he is) gave the following story to Tina Floyd in February of 1952: Benjamin Humphries, who was the father of James Peleham Humphries and William Calvin Humphries moved to Jeffersonville (Twiggs County) Georgia from North Carolina. Later James Peleham Humphries and William Calvin moved to Columbus (Muscogee County) Georgia. From there, they went with a colony that settled at Beaumont, Texas. There James Peleham secured a body of land from the Mexicans. The first deed was written in Spanish. In 1835-36 Wiliam Calvin Humphries and James Peleham Humphries were involved in the Mexican War. James Peleham Humphries was sent out on a detail or was caught in the Battle of the Alamo and was killed. James Peleham Humphries was never married and his property was inherited by William Calvin Humphries. At William Calvin Humphries' death, this property was inherited by his daughter, Luciendo Humphries. She , Luciendo Humphries first married a Moore and had only one child. After Mr. Moore's death she married a Lingo. Their daughter (a Lingo) married Willian Griffin, who was a Methodist minister. Of this union, there were eight children, Bob Griggin, Short (Shorter?) Griffin, Laura Griffin Floyd, Minnie Griffin Hudson, Ella Griffin Edmonson, Josephine Griffin Vinson, Mattie Griffin Leddrick. Tina Floyd continues to add her comments: Several years ago a lady in Tampa decided to trace her ancestry in order that she might join the D.A.R. and in the Library of Congress while checking certain details she was told that perhaps she was one of the missing heirs to the Humphries fortune. She has since been tracing it and has (so I am told) positive proof of everything except establishing that the two Humphries, William Calvin and James Peleham were brothers. If there is anything to this deal the above heir (Josephine Griffin Vinson) will inherit quite a sum. By virtue of Grandaddy Holland surviving Aunt's Eva's mother he will in turn inherit some and of course mamma and Aunt Juliette will also come in for some. I am also told by the above Mr. Cook that our Uncle J.J. Holland also had oil wells in his own rights in California. Will you go personally to the War Department and check on him as: John Joseh holland (Wold War 1) enlisted in the Indiana Infantry. During World War 1 he was stationed in Texas to guard the Mexican Border. As far as I can learn he was discharged while still in Texas. He then enlisted in the Navy and was on the SS "Ohio" during World War 1. Also while you are checking at the Army check on: Sgt. Joe Vinson 116 Field Art. Co. B, Ft. Myer, Virginia. He is reported to have gone to Washington State. It is important that they be found and if you are able to locate any trace of them get their latest addresses and the date of the last communication to them. A Mr. Griffin (whom I did not get to see) that lives in Cochran flew out to Texas last year and it is reported there are 163 oil wells on the property. I asked Mr. Cook what company was involved and he said there are five oil companies involved and there are government royalties that have ben stacking up. It seems that they had a family meeting and raised $3,000.00 to hire an expert geneologist to establish the missing link. I am getting affidavits tomorrow to establish mamma's and Aunt Julliette's birth certificates. I may go down to Tampa this weekend to see Aunt Florence who lives in Palmetto. Aunt Eva said for me to get in touch with Aunt Florence and the two of us to call on this Mrs. Carol Jones, 326 Hyde Park Avenue, Tampa, Florida. It seems they have found Benjamin Humphries grave at Brown's Crossing, Georgia. Also that in 1902 the Atlanta Journal carried advertisements for the missing heirs. I hope the statutes of limitation have not run on this. This letter holds some tantalizing family clues. First, who is Carol Jones?. Who is Frank Cook? Is she a relative or the geneologist? Second, what about the first child of Luciendo Humphries (Moore) why is she not mentioned? At the very least all of this research should have turned out a comprehensive geneology. Where is it? | |
