| Death* | 12 November 1885 | Obituary of Mrs. Susan BlakelyNov. 12, 1885 Thursday evening at six o’clock, after an illness of fourteen weeks, Mrs. Susan Blakely, wife of James Blakely, departed this life at the ripe age of 81 years. She had been in feeble health for sometime previous to her late illness during which her sufferings were intense. She bore her afflictions with divine resignation. No word of complaint marred the beauty of her patient endurance. She was in a precarious condition some weeks before her demise, and several times was thought to be dying, but her wonderful power of resistance proved effectual in warding off the approach of Death, and she was spared to her dear ones for a little while longer, she was bravely cheerful from first to last. The purity and holiness of her life and character, are beyond expression, and her influence will ever be a beacon light to those who knew and loved her. She always had a gentle word and smile for one and all. When suffering most her submission to the will of God became but the greater. She was sustained by His hand which was waiting to help her over the dark river into the glory of eternal rest. When Death claimed her He left her sweetly fair, she seemed “not dead but sleeping.” The lifeless form lay in its ethereal and solemn loveliness. Her hands folded on her breast, her eyes closed as though in dreamless slumber, having no sign of the Destroyer’s hand, save in the hue that blanched the lips, on which a smile of holy calm lingered and a voiceless prayer hung suspended. The funeral took place on Monday last at 9 o’clock A,M. from the German Catholic church. A large concourse of friends followed the remains. The solemn Requiem Mass was chanted by her son, Rev. Aloysius Blakely, of the Passionist Monastery, with Rev. P. Cellestine, prior as Deacon, and Rev. P.severing, sub. Deacon, and Rev. P. Fideles, master of Ceremonies.Mrs. Blakely was born in Butler County on the 15th of Sep. 1804. In 1810 she, in company with her parents removed to Pittsburgh, where she resided until many years after her marriage, then she came to St. Marys, where she has resided since. Mrs. Blakely leaves to mourn her demise two sons and three daughters. Thus ends the spotless life of a truly good woman. May she rest in peace.By one who knew and loved her. From The Elk Co. Thurs. 19th 1885; "Early Phases of St. Mary's" states that Susan Blakely died in 1885 at age 81. Her illness and death are discussed at length in Sebastian Wimmer's diary housed at the St. Marys Historical Society.2 |
| Obituary | 13 November 1885 | Obnituary of Susananna Smyth was (from newspaper article) "Mother died this evening," was the tenor of a dispatch received last evening by Mr. L. J. Blakely, announcing the death of his mother, at her late house in Maryland, at the ripe age of eighty-two. So has passed away to eternal peace a venerable woman, who, in all relations of life, daughter, wife and mother, was as perfect as is possible for aught of earth to be. It has been said and written of her during her life, in the words of the Psalmist; "She riseth also while it is yet night and giveth meat to her household and a portions to her maidens," for her first care was for the comfort of others than herself. Her whole life was one of faith, hope and love, and with her the greatest of all charity. All creeds and races shared in the benefactions her hands silently dispensed. For years possessed of ample means, she held them as part of the belongings of the poor, and on her head rested their blessings. She visited the sick and the dying; made smooth the path of the weary, and gave peace of the afflicted. She was married in 1827, with the venerable husband enjoying fifty-five years of wedded life up to his death in 1882, being happily permitted the great joy of a golden wedding on the 4th of November, 1877; and their joy on that occasion was heightened from the fact that it was before their own son, their youngest, Rev. A. M. Blakely, they renewed the vows of love and fidelity first made fifty years before. The deceased lady was all her life a pious, devout Catholic, and she passed to the better world surrounded by children and grand children and fortified with the sacraments of the Mother Church she loved so devotedly. All who came under her control, servants as well as children were the objects of her anxious solicitude and tender love. Her nature was firm but gentle. Not one of her children ever heard from her lips an angry of fretful word to her husband. Her example was edifying; and if reproof were necessary her children received if from her lips tempered with maternal affection. She came from a long line of honorable ancestry. Her family came to America in 1686, and settled in Delaware, or as it the was "the Counties of New Castle, Kent and Sussex on the Delaware." From thence the family spread through Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The family name was Ruffner. The deceased was the sixth generation. Of your charity pray for the repose of her soul. on 13 November 1885. |

My source for the THOMAS SHORE information was Marshall SHORE, who has done
extensive research on the SHORE ancestors; also, received information from
Tommy Wiggins, a descendant, on Jane Shore Morin and William STAMPS, and Sue Moore, another descendant of Jane Shore & James MORIN.
But Marshall Shore was the main source of info.
